Spooktacular Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Spooktacular Giveaway Hop, hosted by

I'm going to be honest with you fine people and admit that I cannot read really scary books, nor can I watch really scary movies. Unless by "read" and "watch" you mean that I have a hand over my face and peer through tiny openings between my fingers.

But that won't stop me from taking part in this giveaway, so my fright is your gain.

By completing the Rafflecopter below, you can win your choice of a digital copy of one of two books that I think are truly scary. Not in a blood-and-gore kind of way, but more in a psychological, "fear what you can't see" manner.

Afterwards by Rosamund Lupton
It's the story of a mother who will let nothing stop her from finding out who set fire to her children's school.

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
This, my friends, is the standard by which all gothic thrillers are set. Extraordinary, and if you haven't read it, you must.

Please make sure you visit the participating blogs. There are
a lot of them, and each one has some terrific prizes.

Good luck!

Drain You Blog Stop

Welcome to the Drain You Blog Hop & Giveaway,
hosted by MundieMoms and Hobbitsies!

A few months ago, I reviewed Drain You. Now, thanks to this giveaway, you have a chance to win your own copy of Drain You, along with other fabulous prizes. Up for grabs are:
  •  Five copes of Drain You, signed by author M. Beth Bloom
  • A $50 credit at Wasteland, the favorite store of Quinn (Drain You's main character)
  • Pages from Quinn's notebook
  • Ten Drain You bookmarks, handmade by Quinn
  • Ten '90s mixtapes, curated and created by Quinn
Drain You is the story of a California teen who comes across a community of vampires: Summer. The '90s. The rich, sun-bleached neighborhoods of the Los Angeles canyons. Enter Quinlan Lacey, a cool, bored, sarcastic, sexy 17-year-old with a dull part-time video store job and a mild case of teen ennui. That is, until she meets the alluring, River Phoenix-esque James, and realizes the hills are alive with the undead. Inspired more by the early, dry L. A. short stories of Bret Easton Ellis than the current crop of serialized vampire fiction, the supernatural grunge romance, Drain You, narrates the headaches and heartbreaks Quinn undergoes in her quest to stay sane and cool and in love and alive.

A Publisher's Weekly review gushes that "Bloom debuts with a languid, stylish novel that reads like a love letter to cult vampire flicks like The Lost Boys, the work of Francesca Lia Block, and Southern California in the 1990s." For more reviews, check out Amazon and Barnes & Noble

Still uncertain? Check out the book trailer:

I gave the book 4 out of 5 cupcakes (my review was originally published here), primarily because Quinn is so realistic and likable. I admit to finding parts of the book repetitive, but I could not stop reading it. And that is the sign of a book book, non?

About the author:  Bloom's first short story “Love And Other Catastrophes: A Mix Tape” was featured in Story Quarterly and selected by Dave Eggers for inclusion in The Best American Nonrequired Reading: 2003 (Houghton-Mifflin), which he curates annually. Bloom is the founder of underground dance label 100% Silk (profiled here in LA Weekly) AND the producer/lead singer of the band LA Vampires (written up in The Guardian as well as Pitchfork and Fader). Her next book will be published through HarperTeen.

M. Beth lives on the east side of L.A. where she indulges in raw fooding, magazine subscribing, thrift shopping, Sunday matinee'ing, and ladies book clubbing.

The Reluctant Bachelorette

 The Reluctant Bachelorette
by Rachael Anderson
Published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform

Genre: romance, chick lit
Thanks to I am a Reader, Not a Writer for the preview
4 / 5 cupcakes

Have you ever wondered just how much 'reality' is in reality television?

That is one of the subjects broached, albeit tamely, in this sweet love story.

Taycee (I admit ... that name gives me the shivers, and I kept wanting to call her Tracey) has lived in her small hometown forever, refusing to leave even after her parents' deaths. Most of her friends moved on, including Jessa, her best friend who became a television producer. The person she misses the most, though, is Luke Carney, a man she has secretly loved since childhood.

But Shelter Springs is struggling, and Jessa has a plan to revive the town: have an online dating contest, in which Taycee is the prize. Since Taycee's love for Shelter Springs knows no bounds, she agrees ... reluctantly. Well, guess who returns home, just in time to get himself on the show? That's right, Luke.

Yes, we all know where this is headed. And, yes, there is a strong chance that you will get sugar shock and need insulin relief.

But despite the sweetness of this book, there is an underlying melancholy, and that's what attracted me to it. Taycee is darling, but she also suffers. Her parents are dead, her brother moved to the big city, and she can't seem to get her bearings, even if she has remained in one place her whole life. She hates seeing Shelter Springs lose itself, so she allows herself to be a bachelorette in a contest, even if the idea fills her with self-loathing.

Then there is the lack of reality in this show. Taycee comes to especially despise the staging of her dates, frustrated with the voting public's failure to see the truth behind the facade. It makes you wonder how much of what is purported to be 'reality' on television is fake. (I think we all know the answer to this, though, don't we?)

Then there is Luke. Oh, how she has loved him and pined for him. Yet she believes he sees her as nothing more than his best friend's little sister. Can she help him see that she is a grown woman with the desires of one?

Much seems perfect in Shelter Springs, sort of a Stars Hollow, Gilmore Girls kind of schtick. Fortunately, though, Taycee revives the sugar coma. The fact that Rachael Anderson crafted a multidimensional character such as Taycee makes this an enjoyable and, yes, sweet book to read.

Blog Tour: The Reluctant Bachelorette

The Reluctant Bachelorette by Rachael Anderson

Unknowingly cast as the bachelorette for her town’s charity event, Taycee Emerson wants out. Especially when she discovers her old teenage crush, Luke Carney, is one of the bachelors and it's up to the viewers--not her--to decide which bachelors stay or go.

Coerced into participating, Taycee does what any self-preserving girl would do. She launches a subtle attack on Luke’s good name with the hope of getting him voted off the show. Unfortunately, Luke's an eye-for-an-eye kind of guy, and when he discovers what she's up to, it means revenge.

But when their pranks go south, will they screw up any chance they have at a future together, or will they be able to forgive and forget and prove that love really does conquer all?

This book is sweet and fun, much like Taycee herself. A lot of us have been there. We've had crushes on boys we knew in hi school - crushes we just can't let go, no matter how much we know we should.  As Taycee acknowledges her feelings - and Luke discovers his - we get the chance to consider our own what-ifs. At the same time, we get a look at "reality" television and how easily it manipulates us. Some of Taycee's dates are hilarious, and some are adorable. Even those that go well, though, are easy to root against. We want the fantasy, after all. We want her with Luke.
